Known as, "a solid, pocket drummer" and "vibing with a sound like Cindy Blackman", Steph Barker is a drummer with an instant and notable presence.
- Meshell Ndegeocello and Sergio Bellotti
Although Stephanie Barker spends more time on the road these days drumming for rising artists like Catey Shaw and Mal Blum, her new home in the foothills of east of Los Angeles is a long way from Londonderry, New Hampshire, where she was born and raised and, as a three-year-old, started pounding away on a clown drum set she got from Santa.
Steph’s talents won a scholarship from the Berklee College of Music in Boston where she studied with Sergio Bellotti, Jackie Santos, Kenwood Dennard, Ralph Peterson, and Terri Lyne Carrington and won the Terri Lyne Carringoton Scholarship Award for Outstanding Female Musicianship.
While still a student, Steph took advantage of the burgeoning Boston music scene, performing with her band, MRS DANVERS, at venues like Club Church, Cafe 939, The Boston Common, and The Boston Pride Festival. They opened for The Cliks at The Middle East, and for Sleater Kinny’s, Corin Tucker Band, at The Paradise Rock Club.
After making the (inevitable) migration to New York, Steph quickly became known as a passionate musician with killer rhythm, performing with up-and-comers like Catey Shaw, Allison Weiss, Bess Rogers, Chloe Sunshine, Cultfever, Mitten and Starlight Girls. She has graced stages at major music festivals across North America: South by Southwest, Midpoint Music Festival, CMJ Music Marathon, The Fire Island Dance Festival with Mark Stuart Dance Company 2014, and POP Montréal. She has also performed at legendary New York City venues like Pianos, The Highline Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, Bowery Electric, The Knitting Factory, The Bitter End, Rockwood Music Hall, Brooklyn Bowl, and many others.
Steph has just relocated to Los Angeles and is performing with artists, Coast Modern (300), Catey Shaw (Independant) and Mal Blum (Don Giovanni Records).
Steph proudly endorses SJC Custom Drums, Vater drumsticks and Zildjian cymbals.
P.S. Steph is also a huge foodie, so be sure to check the blog for not only music updates, but food updates too. Yum!
